Hackers launched a denial-of-service (DoS) attack on a well-known wallet Electrum server, according to The Devi Security Lab. Hackers used botnets of more than 140,000 computers to attack Electrum nodes and simultaneously deployed malicious nodes. When a user connects to these malicious nodes and sends a transaction using an older version of Electrum, the user is prompted to update the client carrying the backdoor. If the user installs the client as prompted, the private key is stolen and all digital assets are lost. Millions of dollars of digital currency have been stolen, according to Electrum officials. De-dimensional Security Labs recommends that users of electrum wallets be updated to the latest version of the client through the official website and never use the link in the prompt message.

Digital wallet developer Electrum has released an emergency patch saying it found a vulnerability that could lead any website hosting Electrum to steal a user's digital currency, exposing passwords to the JOHNSONRPC interface and ingelling hackers full control of the wallet. Earlier, Electrum released the first patch, but it didn't seem to solve the problem, and they released a second update urgently Sunday night local time.

Since the end of December 2018, Bitcoin wallet Electrum users have lost 771 BTCs (worth about $4 million) in phishing attacks, according to a study released by Malwarebytes Labs. Electrum is known to implement a variant of a technology called Simplified Payment Verification (SPV), which allows users to send and receive transactions without having to download a full copy of the Bitcoin blockchain. An attacker is exploiting a vulnerability that anyone can manipulate a public Electrum peer to carry out an attack. (TNW)

Electrum's ElectrumX performs better than a personal Electrum server and includes a P2P exploration protocol that enables the wallet app of the average user to automatically find and connect to the server. These features make it a great solution for setting up public Electrum servers.

In a forum post on Bitcointalk, website administrator Theymos explained: "If at any time in the past you've logged in to Electrum without a wallet password and opened a web page, your wallet might have been stolen." Particularly paranoid people may want to send all bitcoins (BTCs) from their old Electrum wallets to the newly generated Electrum wallet. "

Use BitHD shields and knives to prevent "message defects" attacks on Electrum wallets.

This "update prompt" is not an official act of Electrum, but a phishing attack by an attacker that exploits a message flaw on the Electrum client and the ElectrumX server, which requires the attacker to deploy the malicious ElectrumX server in advance, and the malicious server is localized by the user's Electrum client (because the Electrum client is a light wallet and the user needs the ElectrumX server to broadcast the transaction). At the time of the madness, malicious ElectrumX servers accounted for as much as 71% of the total, and the show did not fully count that hundreds of bitcoins had been stolen in this phishing attack over the past year or so.

In a blog post, Malwarebytes, an antimalware software company, said the number of infected Electrum Bitcoin wallets had reached 152,000 after the server was attacked by DoS, and the total amount of stolen funds had risen to $4.6 million, Cointegraph reported. The company identified a loader called Trojan.BeamWinHTTP, which also involved downloading previously detected Electrum DoSMiner. It's not hard to run your own Electrum server and point your wallet to just use it. This restores Electrum to the point where it has the same privacy and security attributes as the full node, where no one else can see the address or transaction that the wallet is interested in. Electrum then becomes an all-node wallet.
