Hardware wallets can only be used to generate external owner accounts, and their private keys are never exposed to the Internet environment. When a user generates an account on a hardware wallet, the key is generated within the secure enclave. When a user wants to initiate a transaction, they sign it on the hardware wallet device and broadcast the transaction to the network, a process that does not expose the private key. While a hardware wallet is a great way to save money offline, it's not as portable and easy to use as a browser plug-in wallet like MetaMask.
